Building a Cozy Round Wooden Yurt for Our Family: A Budget-Friendly Adventure

In a world of high costs and traditional housing, we decided to take a different route and build our own round wooden yurt. The total cost for materials came to approximately 3000 EUR, with doors and windows sourced second-hand, making it an affordable yet unique living solution for our family of four.

Building the yurt was an ambitious project, but we were determined to make it work. The structure itself was relatively simple, made entirely of wood, and designed to be both practical and aesthetically pleasing. One of the best features is the round shape, which not only looks beautiful but also creates a cozy atmosphere inside. Despite the lack of insulation, apart from the floor, the yurt stays warm and dry, even in humid conditions. The winters are mild in our area, but the humidity can be a challenge, so we’re grateful for the absence of mold in our home.

We didn’t stop at just building the house. We also constructed a separate outdoor kitchen and outhouse, both designed to be functional and sustainable. The outdoor kitchen is already equipped with a rainwater collection system, ensuring that we have access to water even during dry spells. However, we still need to add a gutter to the yurt itself to improve water collection.

The entire process took us three months to complete, though it could have been finished in half the time if we weren’t also harvesting olives at the same time. Nevertheless, the experience was incredibly rewarding. The yurt has become a home where we can live in harmony with nature, and our two small kids enjoy the open space and the freedom it offers.

A big hug to all the brave souls out there who are choosing to live life on their own terms. We’re proud of our decision and grateful for this cozy, self-built home.
