Our Cozy Amish-Built Shed at the Lake: A Perfect Family Retreat

Several years ago, we purchased a 14×38 ft Amish-built shed, and it has turned into a beloved family getaway. This shed comes with two sleeping lofts, providing enough space for family visits. Before the shed was delivered to our property by the lake in Kentucky, we made sure to have the electric wiring and floor insulation installed.

To make it feel more like a home, we hooked it up to county water, installed a septic system, and had the electricity professionally connected—all of which were inspected and approved. For climate control, we have a Mitsubishi split unit that provides both heat and air conditioning, ensuring comfort year-round.

My husband and brother did an incredible job building out the interior with additional insulation and oak paneling, giving the space a warm and inviting feel. They also added a functional kitchen sink and a bathroom, making it fully equipped for family stays. On the exterior, they constructed a charming side porch where we can relax and enjoy the beautiful lake view.

As for the décor, I had a blast decorating the inside, mostly sourcing furniture and accents from thrift and junk stores. The result is a cozy, personal space that is perfect for our family to gather and create memories.

We primarily use the shed as a retreat for family visits. It’s a simple but meaningful getaway, offering comfort and a beautiful lakeside atmosphere. The project has been a true labor of love, and we’re grateful for the space we’ve created for our family to enjoy together.
