How the water actually moves
The upper basin is filled until it reaches a set overflow opening. As water rises, it naturally spills from the top tote into the lower tote using gravity. There is no pump pushing water downhill. A single submersible pump sits in the lower basin and sends water back up to the top basin through concealed plumbing. This creates a continuous loop that is quiet, efficient, and easy to maintain.
Setting the totes correctly
Each tote should be partially buried on a compacted gravel base so it stays level and does not shift over time. The upper tote sits higher to allow for a clean overflow drop. Taking time here matters because even a small tilt can affect how evenly the water spills over the edge.
Framing and hiding the totes
A wood frame built around the totes gives you straight, square surfaces to work with. From there, stone veneer, stacked stone, or wood cladding completely hides the plastic. This step is what makes the project feel intentional instead of repurposed. Leave a removable panel or hidden access point so the pump can be serviced later.
Overflow details that make it work
Cut the overflow opening cleanly and line it with a spillway or smooth channel so water sheets evenly rather than dribbling. This reduces splash, keeps the sound pleasant, and prevents erosion around the base.
Landscaping for a finished look
Planting around the feature is what sells it. Ornamental grasses, flowering perennials, and moisture tolerant plants soften the edges and help everything blend into the yard. Over time, the plants become just as important visually as the water itself.
