Transforming a Storage Shed into a Cozy Mini Home in Bear Island, NB, Canada

In the heart of Bear Island, New Brunswick, Canada, I embarked on a unique project that turned an ordinary storage shed into a charming 8×12 mini home, complete with an exterior 4-foot porch. Built on a small plot of land, just 1 acre in size, this space-efficient living solution offers both coziness and functionality, reflecting my love for simplicity and innovation.

Originally a simple storage shed, the space was repurposed into a fully functional mini home. The design was focused on saving time, space, and money, while still delivering comfort. One of the most innovative choices I made was incorporating a portable kitchen island bar. This versatile piece can be moved to the center of the room to fit up to six people, though four people can sit comfortably around it. By positioning it against the wall when not in use, the kitchen feels more spacious and allows for an easy division of spaces between the living room and kitchen area. It also makes for a cozy breakfast nook, perfect for two people to enjoy a meal together.

The kitchen exudes a Scandinavian-inspired vibe, highlighted by the addition of a laundry sink. This practical feature not only maximizes space but also complements the overall Nordic-style aesthetic, giving the kitchen a clean, minimalist look. For heating, I opted for a small yet efficient “Grizzly” wood stove from Quebec. Its warmth fills the mini home during colder months, providing a snug and welcoming atmosphere.

One of the best features of this tiny home is the loft area. Located halfway above the kitchen, the loft is a small but functional space measuring 6 feet long by 3 feet tall. It comfortably fits two adults and a small dog, or four children, making it an ideal sleeping area for a small family or guests. The living room below features a sofa bed, which comfortably accommodates two adults for a good night’s rest, completing the living area’s functionality.

Despite the compact size, this mini home feels much larger than its 8×12 footprint thanks to the clever design choices and strategic use of space. It’s a perfect example of how a small space can be transformed into a comfortable and stylish living environment, offering everything needed for a peaceful, simple lifestyle.

Looking ahead, I’m planning to extend the exterior porch next summer. This addition will provide more outdoor space, ideal for relaxing or entertaining during warmer months. As for the bathroom, while the mini home doesn’t have an indoor shower, it features an outhouse, which fits the rustic vibe of the property. I’m also working on transforming a small, inexpensive lawnmower box shed into an enclosed outdoor shower, adding another layer of comfort and convenience to the space.

This little home has become a perfect retreat, offering a peaceful sanctuary in the wilderness of Bear Island. With thoughtful design and clever use of space, it’s a testament to how a small space can provide all the comforts of home. And as I continue to make improvements, this cozy mini home will only become more functional, proving that even the smallest spaces can be both practical and beautiful.
