One common culprit is the Temperature and Pressure Relief Valve (T&P valve)—a safety feature found on every modern water heater. If you notice water dripping from this valve, it’s essential to understand what’s going on and whether it’s a quick fix or a warning sign.
What Is the T&P Valve?
The T&P valve is designed to release water if the tank’s temperature or pressure gets too high. It’s a crucial safety component that prevents your water heater from becoming over-pressurized and potentially dangerous.
Why Is It Leaking?
1. Normal Operation
Sometimes, the valve releases a small amount of water as part of normal functioning—especially after a hot shower or heavy use. Occasional drips from the discharge pipe may not be cause for concern.
2. High Pressure or Temperature
If the water pressure in your home is too high (above 80 psi) or the temperature is set too hot (above 140°F), the valve may leak to relieve pressure. Installing a pressure-reducing valve or lowering the thermostat can help.
3. Faulty Valve
Over time, the T&P valve can wear out, get stuck, or corrode—causing continuous leaking. In this case, replacing the valve is usually the best solution.
